Students are invited to join the Saunders chapter of the National Junior Honor Society in the spring. An invitation is extended to all seventh and eighth grade students who have a GPA of at least 3.5 since the beginning of seventh grade. Membership in the NJHS is both an honor and a responsibility. It is an honor to be chosen and recognizes the students' service, citizenship, leadership, and character in addition to their academic excellence. Interested students submit an application that includes an essay and a letter of recommendation. The faculty council reviews the applications and chooses the new members based on the characteristics above. Every year students with excellent grades are turned down because they have no activities either in or out of school. Participation in school clubs, athletics, student government, scouts, religious youth groups, and other volunteer work are all acceptable.
Members of the National Junior Honor Society are required to keep a 3.5 GPA and perform 16 hours of service, mainly to the school. There are monthly meetings and usually a field trip. (Club members went to Hemlock Overlook Park in Fairfax County in September and participated in a "ropes" course to improve their teamwork and communication skills.)
The sponsor for the 2008-2009 school year is Mrs. Eaton.
